As the culmination of a year of learning about immigration, today our Teen Track students explored Ellis Island, led by Miya Rotstein and Rabbi James.

We read excerpts from Sholom Aleykhem’s novel “Motl, the Cantor’s Son,” describing what it was like for poor immigrants to arrive at the turn of the last century, and marveled at the walls of passports and personal stories and even menus of what immigrants ate on the journey and while waiting at Ellis Island.

Our community includes members whose families have been in the U.S. for many generations and those who are immigrants themselves, and everything in between. Studying the history of immigration in this country has given our teens a deeper connection to all of these histories.
