The 2023 Tony Awards
At the 76th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 11, it warmed our hearts to see stage manager and CBST member Perry Cline, z”l, memorialized. You can watch the Tonys In Memoriam segment here (Perry appears at the 2:20 mark), and see his name on the official 2023 Tony Awards In Memoriam page.
We also loved that CBST member Sara Krulwich once again photographed the Tonys this year. See some of her photos of the 2023 Tony winners that appeared in The New York Times. If you haven’t already, read this Times piece about Sara, featuring highlights of her stunning Tony Awards photos from the past 30 years.
A few Tony Awards “Mazal”s
- Best New Play winner Leopoldstadt, Tom Stoppard’s exploration of Jewish identity and history, delving into the experiences of a prosperous Austrian Jewish family from 1899 to 1955, with a backdrop of profound societal change, rising antisemitism, and the Holocaust.
- Best Musical Revival winner Parade, depicting the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager wrongfully accused of murder in 1913 Georgia, exploring deep themes of love, prejudice, antisemitism, and justice.
- Nonbinary actor Alex Newell won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Shucked, and nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee won Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Some Like It Hot, the first-ever openly nonbinary actors to take home Tonys.
What a night!
