CBST, the Middle East & Me

The Middle East & Me study group from Congregation Beit Simchat Torah has just lost a vital member, Jeffrey Weiss. Jeffrey was a warm, friendly presence, a committed member who was always ready with a greeting and a smile. He was such an asset to the team, attending every meeting, and never shy to share his unique perspectives. Jeffrey prided himself on not being a Zionist, and also had a strong sense of connection and obligation to Israel and to the Jewish people, eager to learn and promote human rights and fairness for all those living in Israel and Palestine, including Sephardi/Mizrahi Jews. Jeffrey was a reliable and integral member of the group, who expressed his opinions and also patiently listened to others with opposing opinions. And he especially cared about supporting younger activists, frequently sharing his love for JFREJ and If Not Now. All of us on the Middle East & Me team will miss Jeffrey; may his memory be a blessing.

CBST, the Middle East, & Me creates space in our community for discussion and reflection on our engagement with the people of Israel and Palestine and with the conflict that remains between them. We build community by exploring our differing opinions and taking pride in the multiplicity of perspectives our community contains.

“ME & Me”  has organized field trips, conversations, panel discussions, and classes. We have hosted a broad range of guest voices to deepen our understanding and engagement, from members of the Israeli Knesset, to LGBTQ Israeli and Palestinian activists and local Jewish educators.

Our team generally meets once each month on a Wednesday evening, currently via Zoom. Half of these are planning meetings, and the other half are programs open to anyone in the broader CBST community.
