"V'Shamru"

In honor of Refugee Shabbat, which CBST observes along with HIAS and Jewish communities across North America and around the world, our Shabbat service lifted up the stories and contributions of immigrants and refugees in several ways.

Thanks to Music Director Joyce Rosenzweig and Cantor Sam Rosen, all of the musical settings for this Shabbat service were written by immigrant composers. These composers, who were born in other countries and came to the United States for a variety of reasons, contributed to the beautiful tapestry of life in this country.

Aminadav Aloni’s “V’Shamru’’ is a rich and captivating setting of this biblical text that we chant at every Shabbat service. In this setting, Aloni engages jazz harmonies and the sounds of musical theater to elevate and highlight this important piece of liturgy.

Setting: “V’Shamru” of Aminadav Aloni (1928-1999)

Voice: Cantor Sam Rosen

Piano: Music Director Joyce Rosenzweig

For more wonderful settings, be in community with CBST at Kabbalat Shabbat services, Fridays at 6:30 p.m. ET, in person or livestreaming on CBST’s website at cbst.org/livestream. All are welcome.
