"L'cha Dodi"

The 17th of Tammuz begins a period in the Jewish calendar known as the Three Weeks. This annual period of mourning and fasting leads up to the holiday of Tisha B’Av (the Ninth of Av), which occurs this year on July 26 and 27.

Tisha B’Av is considered the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. This date commemorates the many tragedies which have befallen the Jewish people throughout history. The holiday traditionally calls for fasting and abstaining from physical pleasures.

During the Three Weeks leading up to Tisha B’Av we traditionally set the words of “L’cha Dodi” to the tune of Eli Tzion, the well-known Tisha B’Av kinah (lament). CBST joins synagogues around the world in singing this melody each Friday night during the Three Weeks.

The ancient melody for Eli Tzion is slow and mournful. It reflects the themes of this somber day of memory. We sing this melody to the words of “L’cha Dodi,” a liturgical poem that spans the heights of joy and the depths of sorrow. Doing so reminds us, emotionally and viscerally, that Tisha B’av is imminent.

Music: “L’cha Dodi.” First melody: Eli Tzion. Second melody: Chasidic. Both melodies arranged by CBST Music Director Joyce Rosenzweig.

Cantor: CBST Cantor Sam Rosen
