“I think through a gay male perspective, there’s a … pageantry of opera and Broadway shows that might be associated with a high Mass or Yom Kippur service or or something along these lines. Maybe sometimes, for queer people… if you grow up in a situation where you’re feeling more lonely, the idea that you have a personal relationship with the Divine can actually make you feel less lonely. And, I think a lot of people do carry that into their adulthoods in ways that maybe ironically helped save them–and I’m using “save” not in the theological sense, but really helped to keep them alive…”
