50th Anniversary Oneg: Chapter 11: "Transforming Our World"

We loved hosting a reunion of two of the plaintiffs and one of the lawyers central to the passage of New York City’s domestic partnership legislation, one of the steps on the legal path to marriage equality for LGBTQ+ people nationally!

At our 11th oneg program celebrating CBST’s 50th anniversary, Rabbi Marisa James interviewed Ruth Berman, Amy Chasanoff, and Randi Weingarten about their roles in the 1988 lawsuit that led to domestic partner benefits for New York City employees.

“I am just so grateful, knowing how far we came and how much courage went into this,” Rabbi James said of the hard-won legal victory.  “It’s a lot for everybody in this community to really take pride in.”
