In February 1977, CBST moved into a loft on Bethune Street and for the past 40 years, we've made the loft our spiritual home. But as our community has grown, the space couldn't accommodate our growing needs. We've been actively searching for a new home for more than a decade, and we've finally found the beautiful space that meets all of our needs.
On March 30, 2011, CBST members voted to approve the purchase of a new home at 130 West 30th Street; on July 18, 2013, CBST's Board of Directors voted unanimously to proceed with construction and on February 5, 2014, ground was officially and ritually broken for our New Home.
In 2014, demolition proceeded swiftly. The upper and lower levels were completely opened up and concrete on the existing mezzanine was removed. Our structural engineer strategized with our team regarding removal of the steel structure of the mezzanine. Demolition of the back wall, of the future sanctuary, allowed natural light to pour into our space.
"Sanctuary seating designs were fine tuned and forwarded to the furniture maker for construction of a prototype. Our sanctuary seating is completely custom designed for our space. The pews are substantial and permanent, but can be easily lifted by two people, stacked on carts and rolled into storage, should the sanctuary be used for dinners and dances. The English designer, Luke Hughes Pews (not kidding) has designed removable seating for spaces small and enormous in British libraries, theaters, schools, churches and universities. We are their first synagogue and largest American project." - Aari Ludvigsen
In 2015, a Dedication Committee, led by co-chairs, Cindy Rizzo and Jonathan Sheffer, launched the planning process and our New Home was dedicated on April 3, 2016 in grand celebration. The entire year is filled with and dedicated to continuing and enhanced programs. We are excited, proud, and inspired to have opened new doors. The long-standing dream has become a reality. This historic project was made possible by the vision, commitment, and generosity of our leadership, members and many friends.
