The Synagogue: A Place of Worship in Time and Space 5779
Archeologists date the oldest synagogue to the 3rd century BCE. What does this structure have in common with our 21st-century centers of learning and worship? Have you wondered about the origin of the Ner Tamid or how layouts of the synagogues vary across time and place? Did you know that Sephardi synagogues have a different Aron Kodesh than Ashkenazi? In this course taught by Miya Rotstein, explore these and other questions, look at decorative art and architecture, and examine historical texts and accounts that have influenced the Jewish House of Worship.
