Tuesday Evenings, Beginning March 3rd

Art as Midrash

6:30 - 7:30 pm (8 Sessions) - This is an invitation to expand your knowledge of Torah through the lens of visual art in this eight week course taught by CBST educator Miya Rotstein. Each class will focus on one of eight stories from the TaNaKh (Torah, Prophets and Writings) and use images of classical and contemporary paintings and sculptures alongside written commentary to expound and reflect a range of Torah interpretations. This class will ask you, as participants, to add to the discussion and creation of your own personal connection to the texts through close reading, chevruta (partner) learning and reflection (rather than art-making; this is a text-study class). Novices of Torah study, art history and Hebrew are welcomed and encouraged to join!

Lessons from the European Diaspora

6:30 - 7:30 pm (6 Sessions) - This course, led by CBST Member Josh Kruchten, is both (1) a text study group to expose participants to very recently-translated or un-translated work and (2) a series of informal discussions and Q&A's with European Jews. Participants will be exposed to texts and ideas that would serve as an introduction to several broad key themes: antisemitism, zionism, whiteness, solidarity. How can contemporary European Jewish responses to these themes help us broaden, deepen, or challenge our own perspectives?

Demystifying Talmud, Passover Style

7:45 - 8:45 pm (6 Sessions) - Take this opportunity to learn with Atara Cohen, Cooperberg-Rittmaster Pastoral and Educational Intern. In this class, we will use passages from the Talmud about Passover to build text reading skills. We will demystify Talmud study by familiarizing ourselves with key terms, recurring structures, and Rabbinic logic. As we go, we’ll learn about the origins of some familiar Passover practices, stage some friendly debates, and enjoy tackling this difficult but rewarding work. Who: The class will be geared to students who can read (but not necessarily understand) vocalized Hebrew print, and have some familiarity with the Jewish canon, although all texts will have translations provided.

Intro to Hebrew II

7:45 - 8:45 pm (8 Sessions) - Taught by CBST Educator Miya Rotstein. Continuation of intro to new Hebrew. New students are welcome with a commitment to catch up. CBST's Lehrhaus Judaica Adult Education programs offer exploration of Jewish text, prayer, Hebrew, holidays & festivals, lifecycles, and more. Whatever your level of Jewish knowledge, you will be enriched by participation. Registration for this class includes a copy of the Hebrew language study textbook, ‘Alef Isn’t Tough.’ If you already have a copy from last semester, great! If not, please email Jkatz@cbst.org to request one.
