Introduction to Asylum Law: A CLE Course for Attorneys - Aug 14

On Wednesday, August 14, 6:00-7:30pm, CBST offers an accredited New York continuing legal education (CLE) course, free of charge for attorneys who will volunteer at least 10 hours at the CBST weekly Pro Se Immigration Legal Clinic (Wednesdays at 6pm), or at another approved venue. The 90-minute CLE course, “Introduction to Asylum Law,” will provide an overview of the law of asylum, with specific reference to cases based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The course grants 1.5 CLE credit hours in Areas of Professional Practice. This course will be taught by Noemi E. Masliah, Esq., Principal of The Masliah Firm, CBST Board Member, and Co-Chair of CBST’s Sanctuary Team. Topics to be covered include:

  • Legal foundations of asylum claims and definition of asylum
  • Past persecution and well-founded fear of persecution
  • Asylum based on particular social group, with specific focus on sexual orientation- and gender identity-based social groups
  • Bars to asylum
