Queering Judaism Creation Lab: A Workshop for Teens

Registration is closed for this event

Intended Audience: Trans/GNC/Queer/Gender Curious Teens (Ages 12-18)

Led by: Earnest Vener

Saturday, March 30 at 6:30pm / Dinner Provided

This interactive workshop will be set up as a laboratory for queering Jewish ritual, midrash (stories), and narratives. In our lab, participants will engage with Jewish texts that reflect gender nonconformity, write trans Jewish midrash (biblical interpretations), create artwork that reflects our identities, and record your own oral story about “your queer/questioning Jewish life.” Workshop attendees will explore the lab, learn, create, and share back with the group. Participants will also get to know one another, enjoy dinner together, celebrate community Havdalah (ceremony at the end of Shabbat), and stay for a performance as part of the Trans Jews Are Here Convening.

Earnest Vener is a trans Jewish educator in the Boston area. He teaches 2nd and 3rd grade at Temple Beth Shalom. Earnest is passionate about Jewish storytelling, talmud study, and mentorship. Earnest received an M.A. in Jewish Studies at the Graduate Theological Union and a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies at UC Berkeley. Prior to moving East, Earnest ran an outdoor Jewish religious school in the Oakland Redwoods. Earnest is recently engaged to Emma Price and they enjoy snuggling with their two cats, studying Torah, playing board games, and working to build a more equitable world.
